WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Acupuncture

Upon completion of this session, participants will have an enhanced knowledge of acupuncture and have an opportunity to integrate acupuncture for pediatric sedation. Participants will be able to learn the history and theory of acupuncture; understand scientific evidence of acupuncture practice; evaluate acupuncture micro-system paradigms; incorporate acupuncture in pediatric sedation practice; and participate in hands-on demonstration of acupuncture and related techniques.

Airway Management Hands- On Workshop (Basic)

Workshop Director: Jennifer Dearden, MD
This course emphasizes assessment and decision-making, which shall enable participants to manage any airway obstruction they encounter in their field of medicine or dentistry. This “practice-changing” program offers various hands-on sessions which shall reinforce learning with diagrams, pictorials and videos. There will be ample practice time with basic airway equipment, taught by our expert airway faculty.

Program Highlights

  • Small faculty-to-student ratio
  • Neonatal, Pediatric and Adult Mannequins available to practice basic airway skills
  • Identify airway landmarks and associated anomalies, and their impact on ventilation
  • Learn simple bag mask ventilation
  • Incorporate airway maneuvers and positioning tactics, to enhance oxygenation
  • Apply airway adjuncts to alleviate obstruction
  • Confirmation with capnography “the gold standard”
  • CPAP/Bipap
  • Learn to predict a difficult airway and prevent a failed airway

Stations

  • Compare/Contrast normal and abnormal airway anatomy
  • Demonstrate proper bag mask ventilation techniques
  • Methods for opening the airway
  • Methods for performing external laryngeal manipulation
  • Insertion of airway adjuncts (OP/NP airways)
  • Supraglottic rescue device: LMA (sub-types: Air-Q, ProSeal, Unique)
