WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Airway Management Hands-On Workshop (Basic)

Workshop Director: Jennifer Dearden, MD
This course emphasizes assessment and decision-making, which shall enable participants to manage any airway obstruction they encounter in their field of medicine or dentistry. This “practice-changing” program offers various hands-on sessions which shall reinforce learning with diagrams, pictorials and videos. There will be ample practice time with basic airway equipment, taught by our expert airway faculty.

Program Highlights

  • Small faculty-to-student ratio
  • Neonatal, Pediatric and Adult Mannequins available to practice basic airway skills
  • Identify airway landmarks and associated anomalies, and their impact on ventilation
  • Learn simple bag mask ventilation
  • Incorporate airway maneuvers and positioning tactics, to enhance oxygenation
  • Apply airway adjuncts to alleviate obstruction
  • Confirmation with capnography “the gold standard”
  • CPAP/Bipap
  • Learn to predict a difficult airway and prevent a failed airway

Stations

  • Compare/Contrast normal and abnormal airway anatomy
  • Demonstrate proper bag mask ventilation techniques
  • Methods for opening the airway
  • Methods for performing external laryngeal manipulation
  • Insertion of airway adjuncts (OP/NP airways)
  • Supraglottic rescue device: LMA (sub-types: Air-Q, ProSeal, Unique)
  • Nasal/oral intubation
  • McGrath, CMAC & Glidescope: Pros and Cons
  • Cricothyrotomy: Anatomy and toolkit review

Hands-On Capnography Workshop

Workshop Director: Bhavani Kodali, MD
Over the years, capnography has become an integral part of monitoring sedation to enhance patient safety. Respiratory issues contribute to a major proportion of fatalities during sedation procedures.

In the last three decades, various professional societies have implemented capnography to enable clinicians to diagnose respiratory depression before it can result in irreversible damage. Dentistry is no exception, and undesirable circumstances have led to death during sedation procedures.

The workshop on capnography will provide a comprehensive understanding of capnography. After the workshop, the clinician will be able to apply the knowledge of capnography physiology to maximize the ability to forecast impending hypoxemia. This ability that will prevent desaturation during sedation procedures. The workshop will also demonstrate various CO2 sampling devices used to monitor respiratory status during sedation. This will enable clinicians to choose the method that is best suited to their clinical practice. More importantly the clinician will also understand the limitations of capnography, so that correct interpretations of respiratory status is made during sedation.
